Lalit Modi reveals PM Modi’s passion for cricket, demands better fan experience

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great cricket fan,” saying their interactions largely revolved around developing cricket infrastructure in Ahmedabad.

According to Lalit Modi, the Prime Minister consistently showed enthusiasm for promoting and expanding the sport in Gujarat.

“Mr. Modi was a great cricket fan. All the dealings I had with him were because he wanted cricket in Ahmedabad,” he said.

Remarks Spark Debate Over Narendra Modi Stadium

Lalit Modi’s comments come after his recent remarks about the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad generated discussion among cricket fans and stakeholders.

He had suggested that, if given the opportunity, he would rebuild the stadium to create a better fan experience. However, he clarified that his comments were not meant as criticism.

“India’s Best Stadium, But Not Good Enough”

While acknowledging the stadium’s achievements, Lalit Modi argued that Indian cricket infrastructure should aim even higher.

“It’s the best stadium in India today. But it’s not good enough,” he said.

He added that if he were responsible for designing world-class venues, he would rethink not only the Narendra Modi Stadium but cricket stadiums across the country.

Calls for World-Class Fan Experience

Lalit Modi believes that with the BCCI’s financial strength and global influence, India should build stadiums that rival the world’s most iconic sporting venues.

He compared Indian facilities with international landmarks such as:

  • Wembley Stadium
  • Lord’s Cricket Ground
  • Camp Nou
  • Old Trafford
  • Etihad Stadium

According to him, India now has the resources to create a truly world-class sporting environment.

Vision for Multi-Purpose Entertainment Hubs

The IPL founder also advocated transforming cricket stadiums into year-round entertainment destinations rather than venues used only on match days.

His Suggestions Include:

  • Modern escalators and easier access for fans
  • Expanded food courts and dining options
  • Retail and shopping areas
  • Fully air-conditioned facilities
  • Improved visitor infrastructure
  • Year-round commercial and entertainment activities

Narendra Modi Stadium Remains a Global Landmark

Located in Ahmedabad, the Narendra Modi Stadium is currently the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of more than 132,000 spectators. The venue also features 76 corporate boxes and modern facilities.

Despite praising the stadium, Lalit Modi emphasized that Indian cricket should continue pushing for innovation and higher standards to deliver an unmatched fan experience in the future.
