KL Rahul emerged as the hero for India in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Australia, steering the Men in Blue to a remarkable six-wicket victory. The game, played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, October 8, saw India chasing a challenging target of 200 runs.
The Indian innings got off to a rocky start when openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan were both dismissed for ducks. The early setbacks continued as Shreyas Iyer, batting at No. 4, also fell without making any significant contribution.
However, it was Virat Kohli and KL Rahul who turned the game around for India with a spectacular 165-run partnership for the fourth wicket. While Kohli’s impressive innings came to an end after scoring 85 runs, KL Rahul remained unbeaten at 97, guiding India to a crucial victory.

In a post-match interview, KL Rahul revealed that when he walked out to bat, Virat Kohli advised him to play cautiously, treating the situation like a red-ball game due to the challenging pitch conditions. Rahul also mentioned that he realized he needed a boundary and a six to reach his century when India required five runs for victory. In a moment of perfect timing, Rahul lofted the ball for a six over extra cover, ending the game in style.
