The rain in Ahmedabad on Monday caused the Indian Premier League match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans to be abandoned without a ball being bowled, effectively eliminating the Titans from the playoff contention.

With a point each, the two teams locked up a spot in the playoffs, with Kolkata securing first place as the only team to have already advanced.

In 2012 and 2014, the two previous occasions that Kolkata finished in the league’s top two, they went on to win the tournament.

All four teams will advance to the playoffs, but the top two finishers will get an extra shot at making it to the May 26 final in Chennai.

Thousands of cricket fans were let down at the world’s largest stadium in Ahmedabad by the unusually heavy rain.

After nearly five hours of relentless rain, the two captains finally shook hands without even tossing a coin.

Gujarat, coached by Shubman Gill and previously won the IPL in 2022 under Hardik Pandya, are now out of the title hunt along with Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, who finished last.

In this edition, the team to beat has been Kolkata, coached by Shreyas Iyer. They have accumulated 19 points from 13 matches, including 10 victories, and are currently leading Rajasthan Royals, who are in second place.

The battle for the last three playoff spots continues with six clubs, including the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Chennai Super Kings.
