Barcelona are reportedly discussing how best to manage the development of Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim, with the 18-year-old struggling to secure regular first-team opportunities under manager Hansi Flick.
According to SPORT, Abdelkarim has played just 12 minutes across 10 official matches despite training alongside Barcelona’s senior squad. With his progress limited by a lack of competitive action, a temporary move to Barça Atlètic could provide the youngster with valuable playing time.
The forward is reportedly open to the possibility, as his main priority is to play regularly and continue developing within Barcelona’s system.
Limited Opportunities Under Hansi Flick
Abdelkarim has received only two brief appearances in official competition so far. He played four minutes against Rayo Vallecano and eight minutes against Getafe, leaving him with little experience of first-team football.
The Galatasaray fixture presented another potential opportunity to feature. With Raphinha unavailable and Gabriel Jesus having played against Getafe, Abdelkarim could have been considered as an attacking option.
However, Flick opted to deploy Dani Olmo as a false nine instead. Barcelona went on to secure a 4-1 victory, but the decision left Abdelkarim on the sidelines once again.
The situation has raised questions about how the club intends to provide the teenager with sufficient competitive experience at a crucial stage of his development.
Abdelkarim Open to Playing for Barça Atlètic
One positive factor for Barcelona is Abdelkarim’s willingness to represent the reserve team if it helps him gain regular minutes.
When signing a contract extension until June 30, 2030, the Egyptian forward reportedly made it clear that he would not be ashamed to step down to Barça Atlètic to continue his development.
He also emphasised that his priority was to play, whether for Barcelona’s first team, the reserve side or the Egyptian national team.
His attitude has reportedly been welcomed within the club. Rather than viewing a move to the reserve team as a setback, Abdelkarim appears to recognise the importance of regular competitive football.
Hansi Flick Faces a Decision Over the Young Forward
Flick reportedly remains impressed with Abdelkarim’s performances in training. However, competition for attacking positions and Barcelona’s depth in forward options have made first-team opportunities difficult to secure.
While training alongside experienced players can help a young footballer improve, regular match action remains essential for gaining confidence, experience and tactical understanding.
Barcelona must now consider whether keeping Abdelkarim around the senior squad is the best option or whether a temporary move to Barça Atlètic would better support his development.
Providing the teenager with consistent playing time could help him adapt to the club’s system while keeping him on course for a future role in the first team.
