Holders Manchester United knocked out of FA Cup by Fulham

Manchester

The FA Cup champions Manchester United suffered their season’s worst performance when they were ousted by Fulham after losing a penalty shoot-out 4-3 in the fifth round on Sunday.

The match started with a 1-0 advantage for Calvin Bassey’s team in the first half at Old Trafford until Bruno Fernandes scored to make it 1-1 which extended the game into extra time.

Fulham gatekeeper Bernd Leno emerged as the match hero by saving penalties from Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee while Fulham converted all four of their attempts.

Fans expressed their displeasure at half-time as United suffered yet another disappointing outcome during a season where they finished 14th in the Premier League standings.

Last year the 13-time FA Cup winners beat Manchester City in the final after having reached the final for two consecutive seasons.

Manchester United will not make a Wembley appearance this season since their remaining opportunity to win silverware lies solely with the Europa League.

“It’s hard. According to Amorim we possessed the best opportunities throughout the match but penalties can result in either outcome and today fortune did not favor us.

Although we’ve dropped games and trophies this season our aim remains to win the Premier League title.

The duration until this situation changes remains uncertain to me. When you approach defeats with such thinking you will experience more suffering.

Old Trafford had a difficult week when 200 job cuts were announced together with United’s lackluster performance against Everton and a narrow Ipswich victory.

United manager Amorim described his current experience as “hard” while facing another setback during his brief tenure following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.

United travel to Real Sociedad for their Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday before facing Arsenal in their next Premier League match.
