Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan announced his retirement from international football on Monday, following his leadership role at Euro 2024. In his statement, Gundogan cited “a certain tiredness” both physically and mentally as the primary reasons for his decision.

The announcement marks the end of an era for the German national team, as Gundogan’s contributions were pivotal during his tenure. His retirement comes after a distinguished career representing Germany on the international stage, where he played a crucial role in both World Cup and Euro tournaments. Gundogan’s departure opens a new chapter for the team and its future leadership.

“After a few weeks of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my national team career,” Gundogan wrote on social media. He explained that this decision comes after considerable thought about his physical and mental well-being. Gundogan’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in his football journey, highlighting his dedication and contributions to the German national team throughout his career.

“I look back with great pride on having played 82 international matches for my home country—a milestone I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011,” Gundogan reflected.

He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Germany on the global stage, cherishing the memories and achievements from his extensive international career. This journey, he noted, has been an honor and a profound personal accomplishment.

His retirement comes after the retirements of Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller. Kroos retired from professional football after Euro 2024, while Mueller ended his Germany national team career last month.

Gundogan, who will be 34 years old in October, captained the Germany squad that made it to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 but was defeated by Spain in extra time, who went on to win the tournament.

Although Germany suffered a painful defeat, they showed that they are once again a strong team to be taken seriously after disappointments in the World Cup and Euro 2020.

“The best part for me was definitely the great privilege of guiding the team as captain during our home European Championship last summer,” expressed the midfielder from Barcelona.

Gundogan, who achieved five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his seven seasons at Manchester City, acknowledged feeling the impact of a packed schedule ahead of Euro 2024.

I experienced fatigue in both my body and my mind, prompting me to ponder. He stated that the competitions at both club and national levels will not decrease in intensity.

I will surely remain a supporter of this national team and am optimistic that the positive progress will persist, allowing us to potentially become strong contenders for the main title at the 2026 World Cup.

“We possess an amazing coach, a highly capable team, and excellent team morale.”

Gundogan played his first game for Germany against Belgium in October 2011 but was unable to participate in their 2014 World Cup victory due to a back injury. He was unable to participate in Euro 2016 because of a dislocated kneecap.

He was the initial German soccer player with Turkish roots to lead the national team, participating in four significant competitions. He also sat on the bench during Euro 2012 without playing.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his desire to keep working with Ilkay, a remarkable captain.

The national team’s door is always open, but we support his choice and hope for the best in his future, both in his career and personal life.
