Australia’s Glenn Maxwell played an unforgettable innings in the ODI World Cup 2023, leading his team to a remarkable three-wicket victory over Afghanistan on November 7th in Mumbai. Despite facing cramps and physical discomfort, Maxwell scored an incredible 201 not out as Australia successfully chased down a target of 292 runs, even after being reduced to 91 for the loss of seven wickets. Maxwell’s historic innings set several records, both for Australia and overall. Here is a list of the records broken:
- Highest individual score in an ODI run-chase: Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 surpassed Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman’s 193, achieved against South Africa in 2021. This remarkable performance also marked the first instance of a batter scoring a double-century while chasing in ODIs.
- Highest individual score for Australia in ODIs: Maxwell’s 201 not out eclipsed Shane Watson’s previous record of 185 not out, achieved against Bangladesh in 2011.
- Highest runs for a batter at number three or lower: Maxwell’s 201 not out became the highest score by a batter batting at number three or lower, surpassing Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry, who scored 194 not out against Bangladesh in 2009.
- Highest partnership for the seventh wicket or lower: Maxwell and Patrick Cummins’ unbeaten partnership of 202 runs set a new record as the highest partnership for the seventh wicket or lower in all men’s ODIs. This feat surpassed Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid’s partnership of 177 runs against New Zealand in 2015.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Maxwell shared his thoughts: “It’s (his innings) so fresh at the moment I’m a bit numb to it. It was great fun. It just felt like it was me and Patty [Cummins] having fun out there. I’ll probably reflect a bit more over the next few days and hopefully recover and get some movement back in my hamstring and calves. It’s pretty raw at the moment.”
With this victory, Australia became the third team to secure a spot in the semifinals of the ODI World Cup 2023, following India and South Africa.
