Former Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has pledged 30 million lari ($10.7 million) to the national soccer team following their historic Euro 2024 achievement, reaching the last 16 by defeating Portugal 2-0. Ivanishvili, a billionaire and founder of the Georgian Dream party, made the donation through his charitable foundation in recognition of what he termed a “historic and dream victory.” He promised an additional 30 million lari if Georgia advances past Spain in the upcoming match. Ivanishvili, who amassed his wealth in Russia before returning to Georgia and entering politics, founded Georgian Dream in 2011 and served as prime minister for one year. His influence over the party, of which he is the honorary chairman, has drawn criticism both domestically and internationally for alleged authoritarian and pro-Russian leanings. Despite the team’s success on the field, Georgia remains politically divided, as evidenced by recent protests and legislative actions within parliament.
