Former world heavyweight champion Fury retires from boxing

Tyson Fury has retired from boxing, weeks after a second consecutive loss to Oleksandr Usyk, the former world heavyweight champion said on Monday.

“This is going to be short and sweet,” the British boxer posted on social media. “I am retiring from boxing”.

“It’s been an awesome ride, I love every minute of it,” Fury continued, though he has also walked away and come back to the ring.

The “Gypsy King”, 36, last fought on December 21 and failed his rematch with WBA, WBC and WBO champion Usyk in Riyadh.

If you were to ask Fury after the fight if the world would see him fight again, he said: “You might do, you might not. Who knows?”

Fury fought two periods as heavyweight champion and finished with 34 victories, two losses and one draw. He retired after beating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 but rejoined in later that year.

Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, has not contacted the boxer before his retirement, he told the BBC. ‘I have said this since day one that I will not in any sense try to influence him,’ Warren said.

‘If he wants to do that, well then great. He’s been all in. Probable the greatest British heavyweight of his time.

“Two time world champion, two close contests with Usyk. He’s got a good salary, got a head on his shoulders, got a beautiful family. God bless him, enjoy.”

All three referees awarded 116-112 to Usyk in the Saudi Arabia fight last month. Their first fight was a split decision between the Ukrainians in May 2024.

Fury is not due to face another former world champion, Anthony Joshua, in an all-British showdown, and it does not look like he will.

Joshua said Saturday that it “must be” Fury and a fight with him this year. And Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom didn’t believe it was the end of Fury’s career either.

“If you don’t feel any connection to it any more and you don’t want to play anymore, I believe retirement is the answer,” Hearn said.

“Sad fucking fucking btw for the British fighters because we get the opportunity to fight the big fight in boxing but if that’s all there is to come then he has been good. I don’t think (is the last time we’ll ever see him box).

Fury also won his first world title by shocking Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine in November 2015 and he was WBA, IBF and WBO champion.

Then he took time off, more than two-and-a-half years of his life, dealing with mental health issues.

Fury was called up to fight again in 2018 and double-cupped Wilder for the WBC title back in 2020, winning his second of three fights against the American.

He survived a big scare from former MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in 2023 and lost twice to Usyk last year.
