Top 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders

The Professional Footballers’ Association Men’s Players’ Player of the Year often called the PFA Men’s Players’ Player of the Year or simply the Player of the Year is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged to have been the best of the year in English football. The award has been presented since the 1973–74 season and the winner is chosen by a vote amongst the members of the players’ trade union, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). The current holder is Virgil van Dijk, who won the award on 28 April 2019. Van Dijk is once again in contention and looks good to reclaim the award for the second time in two years.  The Top 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders for this season has some very influential names.

Several players have distinguished themselves with their performances throughout the season and their displays have played no small part in helping their various clubs remain on course to achieve their season objectives. The end of the current EPL season is near and the players and the process of scanning the players for the award is on. 

Here are the Top 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders as per Bleacher Report’s rating. 

10 ) Danny Ings – Southampton

The Southampton forward has scored 14 goals from 24 matches for the club in the bygone season and has looked at his lethal best. Courtesy his season exploits, Southampton climbed to 15th with 22 points from 20 games. Ings joined Southampton on loan in August 2018, with his move made permanent on 1 July 2019 following an obligation to buy clause in his contract. Having a season to remember, Ings features 10th on the list of 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders for the 2019/2020 season.

9) Mohammad Salah- Liverpool

The Liverpool forward has already won the award in the 2017-18 season beating the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Harry Kane, Leroy Sane, David Silva and David de Gea. He scored 32 in the season that he won the award and looks good to win the award for the second time in three years. 

He has scored 11 goals this season, six of those in the champions league. Salah averages 28 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 77%, and has 6 assists.

8) Raul Jimenez- Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Wolves striker has scored 10 goals in the 2019/20 season and has played a key role in taking his side to sixth in the points table. Jiminez averages almost 26 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 74% and has 6 assists. He has made 579 successful passes in the season while 29 percent of his shots have been on target and maintained a shooting accuracy of nearly 40 percent.

7) Wilfred Ndidi- Leicester City

The Leicester City midfielder has one assists and two goals in the bygone EPL season. He has made 1028 passes overall and 50 plus passes per match. Leicester is third on the EPL 2019-10 points table and Ndidi has played a huge role in lifting the spirits of his team. A playmaker in the middle of the pitch, it will be a huge honour for Ndidi if he is awarded the PFA Player of the Year for this season. 

6) Sergio Aguero-Manchester City

City’s all-time leading goal scorer has scored 16 goals from 18 games this season out of which his team has won 12 matches. Besides the goals, he has had three assists and 249 passes. Out of a total of 58 shots, 22 of them were on target which resulted in 16 goals. He maintained a shooting accuracy of 40 percent in the meantime. 

5) Jamie Vardy- Leicester City

Leicester’s premier striker Vardy has had a season to remember as he scored 17 goals from 21 appearances this season. He also had four assists and a total of 259 passes in the meantime. Overall in 197 appearances for the club, Vardy has 97 goals. The veteran striker has been key to his club’s telling success this season. Leicester has gone up by six spots to third in the EPL 2019-20 season. They finished ninth last season. 

It has been an incredible campaign for him so far, one that has represented something of a renaissance. Leicester will hope for the veteran striker to continue his rich vein of form into the business end of the season, as they look to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League football for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

4) Trent Alexander-Arnold- Liverpool

Arnold is regarded as one of the gifted young players and has been flourishing since he joined Liverpool. The 21-year-old has enhanced his superstar status with a series of eye-catching displays for the Reds.

His stats do real justice to the position he plays on the pitch for his club. As a defender, he has 9 assists and 35 tackles this season. He also has 1466 passes including 46 clearances and six clean sheets. He has made 63 percent successful tackles including almost 67 passes per match. The England Full back is fifth on the list of 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders for the 2019-20 season. He is also being termed as a ‘New-Age Full-Back for Liverpool’.

3) Virgil van Dijk- Liverpool

Van Dijk is the current holder of this award having won it in the 2018-19 season. The Liverpool defender has made 1807 passes in total with over 80 passes per match. He has maintained nine cleansheets, including 109 clearances and 56 percent successful tackles. Liverpool have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season and Van Dijk has had a huge role to play in the back four for the Reds. 

Van Dijk will become the second player after Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the PFA POTY award in successive seasons. He has been consistently superb throughout the season. That’s why he remains in the list.

2) Kevin de Bruyne-Manchester City

The City midfielder has scored seven goals in the season and four of them in the Champions League. To add to his seven goals, he has made 15 assists in the season and a total of 1265 passes. The Belgian has also made 55 passes per match. He has made a good partnership with Raheem Sterling and has fed off penetrative balls in the scoring area. 

With 15 assists so far, De Bruyne is inching closer to breaking Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists in a single Premier League season. He has played the season reminding everyone of the fact that he is capable of deciding any game. He is second on the list of top 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders for the 2019-20 season.

1) Sadio Mane-Liverpool

Mane tops the list of top 10 PFA Player of the Year Contenders for the 2019-20 season after having an incredible season with the Reds. He has spearheaded the team upfront and formed a formidable partnership with Salah. 

Both he and Salah has scored 22 goals in total scoring 11 apiece. Since joining the club in the 2016/17 season, Mane has had a telling effect in his side’s EPL campaigns. Besides 11 goals this season, Mane has also made six assists, 658 passes and 27 crosses. Mane has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers and his form will be crucial if Jurgen Klopp’s side are to end their title drought at the end of the season.
