Arsenal News: Legend tells Arsene Wenger about transfer miss that would have changed the club

Arsenal would have ended their drought of the Premier League had they signed Luis Suarez from Liverpool in 2013 according to former legend Ray Parlour.

The Gunners had bid £40,000,001 in the summer of 2013 – looking to activate what they believed was Suarez’s release clause at the time with the Reds.

Liverpool felt the offer to be derisory and dismissed the advances from their Premier League rivals. However, that was not before causing a real stir at Anfield.

The Gunners had an agreement with Suarez – which prompted the Uruguayan to hand in a transfer request in order to force a move through to the Emirates.

The transfer finally fell through after then-manager Brendan Rodgers and club captain Steven Gerrard were able to convince the former Ajax man to stay put. Suarez went on to score 31 goals in 33 games the following season – helping Liverpool to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League.

Suarez goes from stength to strength

That, would however, prove to be Suarez’s final season at the club as Barcelona came calling in the summer of 2014 to prise away Liverpool’s crown jewel in a £64.98 million move.

Parlour, who won the Premier League title on three occasions with Arsenal feels that the Barcelona forward would have surely fire the Gunners to the Premier League crown – which they last won in 2003-04.

“Suarez was the one,” Parlour told Sky Sports. “They would have won the league if they had Suarez.

“I don’t know who tried to get the deal done. He’d be frustrated not to get someone like Suarez.”

Suarez helped Barcelona to the treble in his first season at Camp Nou – scoring 23 goals in the process. Since then, the forward has won the Pichichi with Barcelona with 40 La Liga goals in 2015/16 in addition to nine trophies which includes two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy.
