When Dimitar Berbatov asked his agent to f*** off

Dimitar Berbatov, who joined Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2008/09 season, has made some startling revelations regarding the transfer saga.

Berbatov revealed that he was keen to join United, and hence he rebuffed any interest from Manchester City, who were supposedly interested in luring the Bulgarian forward too.

While speaking in the interview about City’s move for him, Berbatov reportedly said, “I don’t think it was that close, to be honest. My agent told me about some interest but I said, ‘Don’t even bother mentioning anyone else, I’m going to Man United,’ because of the history, the players, the tradition, everything.

“I think it was the night before City signed Robinho from Real Madrid and my agent said, ‘Berba, there’s another team in for you’. I said, ‘F*ck off, we’re going to Man United’

At that point in time, City were on the brink of being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Hence, the sudden influx of cash meant that they were better suited to invest in the transfer market. Accordingly, according to Berbatov’s agent, City were offering better wages to the player. Still, the player stayed firm on his decision.

He said, “It’s not all about the money sometimes, though. I was like a horse with blinkers. For me, it was the right decision because going to the top of the mountain was my dream, especially when you come from Eastern Europe, from a small town, and no one’s done it before you. It was a great feeling.”

Berbatov attained a cult status at United, owing to his dynamic gameplay and the flair with which he played on the field. He scored 56 goals in 149 appearances in all competitions for United, including a memorable hat-trick against archrivals Liverpool in 2010.

Berbatov left Tottenham in dire circumstances, and his former club and their fans were certainly unhappy with his move. The player, who understood this situation trusted his gut to follow his dreams and hence secured a move to the red side of Manchester.

Regarding Spurs’ reaction to his transfer, Berbatov remarked, “It’s difficult. You see it all the time with players moving clubs. In my case, it was me simply following my path because ever since I was a small boy, I’d always imagined playing for the biggest club in the world.

“When that moment arrived I know a lot of people were angry with my choice, but I needed to follow my path.”

Needless to say, Berbatov’s performances and approach towards the game at United earned him a respectable status amongst the Old Trafford faithful.
