Dubai: 2 football fans arrested for using distress signal flares during matches

Dubai Police announced on Thursday that they arrested two football fans for deploying distress signal flares during games.

Following this occurrence authorities issued strict warnings to fans about avoiding pyrotechnics and flammable items. The law imposes up to three months in prison and a maximum fine of Dh30,000 for possessing banned or dangerous items such as fireworks at athletic venues.

The warning follows numerous occasions where fans used dangerous signals at sporting events creating serious safety threats.

The Dubai Police have reinforced the necessity of following Federal Law No. 8 of 2014 that regulates security measures for sports facilities and events. Federal Law No. 8 of 2014 establishes the security regulations for sports facilities and events.

The authorities have warned fans to avoid bringing hazardous materials and fireworks to stadiums because these items pose a risk to everyone present including fans, players, officials and all nearby individuals.

Maj-Gen Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi who serves as Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs confirmed that police units such as security teams, special operations forces, traffic patrols and mounted units stand ready to protect players officials and fans at every match. The police would take strong action against any stadium security violations.

Violent behaviors such as throwing substances or liquids at spectators or using offensive gestures will result in offenders facing both imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh30,000.

Dubai Police will take legal action against those who violate the law to protect sports venues according to Al Ghaithi’s statement. The police committed to securing stadiums and their audiences both indoors and outdoors while protecting vehicles and offering necessary services throughout the entire duration of the matches.

Sharjah Police arrested multiple fans following a large-scale fight that broke out during an ADNOC Pro League game in 2023. The police arrested all participants of the fight but subsequently released them following their interrogation.

Public prosecutors in Abu Dhabi issued arrest orders for all fans who participated in the riots during the Al Ain versus Al Wahda match in 2022.
