Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt will manage Fenerbahce on an interim basis. The Turkish Super Lig club confirmed the appointment on Wednesday. Former manager Ismail Kartal resigned on Tuesday. Kartal left following a 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Galatasaray.
Returning To Familiar Ground
Kuyt previously made over 200 appearances for Liverpool. He moved to Fenerbahce as a player in 2012. He won the Turkish league title two years later. The Dutchman gained coaching experience in Belgium and the Netherlands. He joined Fenerbahce as an assistant coach in June.
Stepping Up As Technical Supervisor
Fenerbahce released an official statement regarding the managerial change. The club assigned Kuyt as the technical supervisor. He will lead the first team until the board appoints a permanent replacement.
Closing The League Gap
Fenerbahce currently sit fifth in the Turkish league table. They trail league leaders Galatasaray by six points. Kuyt faces an immediate challenge to close the gap and restore squad confidence.
