Casemiro physical condition became a topic of discussion after Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United, and Erik ten Hag provided insights during his post-match press conference.
The Brazilian midfielder, who was absent from the Premier League derby against Manchester City, made his return to the squad for the match against Newcastle and was even given the captain’s armband for the game.
In contrast, the club’s regular captain, Bruno Fernandes, was named among the substitutes as Ten Hag made several expected changes, including seven alterations to the starting lineup.
However, Casemiro’s appearance on the field was limited to the first 45 minutes, during which Newcastle took a 2-0 lead with well-executed goals by Miguel Almiron, who had replaced the injured Matt Targett early in the game, and Lewis Hall. Casemiro’s performance was further marred by a yellow card, seemingly a result of persistent fouling.
During his post-match press conference, Ten Hag was questioned about Casemiro’s absence in the second half, to which he replied, “He was injured. Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off.”
For the second half, Sofyan Amrabat replaced the skipper for the night, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka substituted Diogo Dalot in a double change to strengthen the team’s defense. Wan-Bissaka made his first appearance since the Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion on September 16. However, Casemiro’s condition is expected to deplete the midfield options for the upcoming top-flight trip to Fulham.
In response to a question about the possibility of Casemiro being ruled out until the mid-November international break, Ten Hag stated, “I can’t give an answer on that [now]. We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out.”
