Amir Cup 2020 Round of 16 Draw | 48th Edition of Amir Cup

The Amir Cup is one of the biggest soccer extravaganzas in Qatar which features the first and second division teams. Interestingly, the inaugural match of the Amir Cup was played in 1972/73. Al Ahli was the first team to win the Amir Cup in 1972/73. Since then, this football extravaganza in Qatar has captured the attention of soccer fanatics from across the world. This event is contested every season by 17 QNB stars league and second division teams. The most successful team of this competition is Al Sadd who has won the cup a record 16 times. They are followed by Al Arabi who has bagged the coveted trophy 8 times.  

The Qatar Football Association conducted the 2020 Amir Cup draw

Notably, the Qatar Football Association (QFA) conducted the Amir Cup draw recently. It is interesting here to note here that Doha giants Al Sadd will be up against Al Kharaitiyat in their opening clash of the 2020 Amir Cup. Well, the Amir Cup is entering its 48th edition this time. All eyes will be on Al Sadd as they are the team to beat ever since the Amir Cup was founded.

In the other matches, Al Sailiya will compete against Umm Salal. But note that people and fans would have their eyes fixed on the match between Al Sadd and Al Kharaitiyat. Interestingly, at the draw ceremony which was held on Monday, it was announced that a total of 16 teams would compete in this edition of the Amir Cup.

The Competition Rounds of the Amir Cup 2020

In the current edition, the Amir Cup will comprise of five rounds. Thus, it is quite evident that the organizers are eager to give each team a fair chance. This also implies that any team can stage a comeback if they have had their share of bad luck in the first two rounds. However, if a team performs in a shoddy manner, then there is no guarantee that whether the team will remain in the competition or not. So, let’s take a glance at the various rounds of the Amir Cup.

1st to 5 Rounds of Amir Cup 2020

  • First Round

In the first round, matches will be held between the fourth and fifth placed teams. Thus, both these teams would be eager to put up their best show in order to qualify for the next round.

  • Second Round

The top three teams of the Second Division along with the winner of the Mesaimeer-Al Shamal clash will compete against the clubs that have a ranking of 9 to 12 in the QNB Stars League. Note that these matches will be a grand affair as the competition will heat up when all these teams face each other respectively.

  • Third Round

The teams that manage to qualify in the second round would go to the third round in the Amir Cup 2020. However, note that they would be up against the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th placed teams from the QNB Stars League. The winners of these matches will progress to the fourth round of the tournament. As there would be a fair amount of competition here, football fans will be able to experience some nail-biting finishes.

  • Fourth Round

The fourth round which is also known as the Quarter Final of the Amir Cup, would witness the top four teams of the QNB Stars League compete against the four qualifying teams from the third round. The matches are expected to generate a fair amount of excitement among viewers.

  • Fifth Round

The fifth round will witness the winning teams of the fourth round play against each other. The two winning teams from the fifth round will progress to the finals. Note that the fifth round is also known as the semi-final of the Amir Cup 2020.

Final Match of Amir Cup 2020

The winner of the finals will be crowned as the champions of the 48th edition of the Amir Cup. In other words, they will be the champions of Qatar and the toast of the global footballing community.  

Hence, it is quite evident that the 2020 Amir Cup will be super exciting for soccer fans from across the world. Football lovers will be waiting with bated breath to catch all the action live!
