Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz battled through an inconsistent start to defeat fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 and reach the Japan Open final on Monday.
The top seed will face Czech player Jiri Lehecka in Tuesday’s final as he looks to claim his first singles title since returning from a wrist injury.
Alcaraz Fights Back After Losing Opening Set
Alcaraz appeared in control at 5-4 in the opening set after securing an early break, but two shaky service games allowed Munar to turn the momentum around.
The Spaniard eventually lost the set 7-5 after dropping 16 consecutive points at the end of the set.
Reflecting on the difficult opening set, Alcaraz admitted he was unsure what had happened but was pleased with his ability to recover.
He then raised his intensity, produced more aggressive tennis and secured crucial breaks to regain confidence.
Spaniard Dominates Deciding Set
After a sluggish beginning to the second set, Alcaraz gradually found his rhythm and levelled the match at one set apiece.
The seven-time major champion then took control in the deciding set, using powerful and precise shot-making to wear down world No. 49 Munar.
Alcaraz won the final set 6-1 to complete the comeback and secure his place in the championship match.
Road to Recovery Continues
The Japan Open final represents another important step in Alcaraz’s return from injury.
The 23-year-old completed his career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open in February, but suffered a wrist injury two months later.
He returned to competitive tennis at the US Open, where he reached the quarter-finals, before showing further signs of improvement during Team Europe’s successful Laver Cup campaign last month.
His run in Tokyo now gives him the opportunity to claim his first singles title since making his comeback.
Lehecka Sets Up Final Against Alcaraz
Alcaraz’s opponent in the final was Jiri Lehecka, who defeated eighth seed Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2 in the other semi-final.
The Czech produced a strong performance to book his place in the title match and remained on course to win his first trophy of the season.
The Alcaraz-Lehecka clash will take place in Tokyo on Tuesday, with the defending champion aiming to continue his impressive comeback by retaining his Japan Open crown.
