Amidst the chaos in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following the Men in Green’s fourth consecutive loss in the ODI World Cup 2023, former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has criticized PCB Chief Zaka Ashraf for his handling of the situation. After Pakistan’s defeat to South Africa, a leaked conversation involving skipper Babar Azam added to the turmoil in Pakistan’s cricketing world.
Many former cricketers expressed their disappointment with news channels and PCB Chief Zaka Ashraf for allegedly leaking Babar’s chats to the Pakistani media to be shown on live TV. In the midst of this controversy, Shahid Afridi voiced his concerns about the situation and called on Zaka Ashraf to focus on his responsibilities as the PCB Chief.
Speaking on Samaa TV on October 31, Afridi emphasized, “Zaka Ashraf is not running a club. He’s the chairman of PCB. He should keep a lot of things in mind. You are calling the owners of a media house and saying that somebody is saying things about you. For God’s sake, do your job. Deliver what is expected from you.”
Afridi continued to criticize Zaka Ashraf, stating, “They are talking about you because you are giving them the chance. Just do your job. The team is playing in the World Cup, and you are giving one statement after another. Sometimes you are talking about Babar, and sometimes about another player or support staff. For starters, get a hold of your chair and try to fulfill what is expected from you. Focus on the problems that need to be addressed. Forget about what is being said about you. Just do your job, Zaka Ashraf sir.”
In the midst of this controversy, Pakistan managed to secure a convincing seven-wicket victory against Bangladesh on October 31, ending their four-match losing streak. Pakistan still needs to win two more of their remaining games and rely on other top teams slipping in the rankings to secure a spot in the top four. Currently, Pakistan is fifth on the points table with three wins and four losses in seven games.
