Kylian Mbappe made history on Wednesday by becoming the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in the UEFA Champions League. The Real Madrid forward achieved the milestone at the age of 27 during his team’s match against Roma.
Mbappe marked the occasion by scoring a first-half equaliser as Real Madrid secured a 4-3 victory. He surpassed Lionel Messi, who previously held the record after reaching 100 Champions League appearances at the age of 28 in September 2015.
The milestone further underlined Mbappe’s impact in Europe’s premier club competition since making his debut as a teenager.
Erling Haaland Breaks Messi’s Record for 60 Champions League Goals
Mbappe was not the only player to surpass a Messi record on Wednesday. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland also reached a major milestone, scoring twice in his team’s 4-2 defeat at home against Paris Saint-Germain.
Haaland took his Champions League tally to 61 goals in 60 appearances. According to UEFA, he became the youngest player to score 60 goals in the competition at 26 years and 85 days, breaking Messi’s previous record by one day.
Despite Haaland’s individual achievement, Manchester City were unable to secure a positive result against the French side.
Mbappe’s goal against Roma was his 72nd in the Champions League, moving him ahead of former Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez into fifth place on the competition’s all-time scoring list.
The French international has continued to deliver consistently in Europe’s biggest club competition. He also scored Real Madrid’s opening goal in their 2-1 victory over Inter Milan last month.
His latest achievement reflects the scoring consistency he has maintained across different stages of his career.
From Monaco Debut to Champions League Record Holder
Mbappe made his Champions League debut for Monaco in September 2016, aged just 17. Since then, he has established himself as one of the competition’s most prolific forwards.
During the previous season, he finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer with 15 goals.
One of his standout performances came against Olympiacos, when he scored a hat-trick in six minutes and 42 seconds. The achievement ranked among the fastest hat-tricks in Champions League history.
The latest records highlight the remarkable achievements of Mbappe and Haaland, two of the leading forwards of their generation.
While Mbappe has reached 100 appearances at a younger age than Messi, Haaland has set a new benchmark for reaching 60 Champions League goals.
Both players continue to strengthen their positions among Europe’s elite, adding new milestones to their already impressive careers.
