Priyam Garg named Indian Captain at ICC Under-19 World Cup 2020

Priyam Garg has been selected to be the captain of the Indian team at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2020. The batsman from Uttar Pradesh has been named as the captain of the 15-member squad that will take part in the tournament to be held at South Africa. The Junior Selection Committee had previously held a meeting for choosing the team for the Under-19 World Cup that will take place between the 17th of January and 9th of February next year.

19-year old Priyam Garg is a right-handed batsman and will lend strength to the Indian top order. He has already scored a List A century and first-class double century in his career so far, also being part of the India C team that came second in the Deodhar Trophy. In the final match versus India B, Garg scored 74 runs as well. For the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, he was the second highest run-getter for Uttar Pradesh, notching up 814 runs with an average of 67.83. This tally comprised of two hundreds including his career-best knock of 206 runs.

India, the defending champions, have been put in Group A for the ICC Under-19 World Cup along with Japan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The 13th edition of this tournament will have 16 teams fighting it out for top honors across 4 groups. The top two teams in every group will make it to the Super League stage of the tournament. India has won the tournament four times till date which is the highest for any country. In 2018, they defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the final game to maintain an undefeated streak throughout the tournament. Prior to the commencement of the Under-19 World Cup, India will be traveling for three one-day games against South Africa’s Under-19 team along with a Quadrangular Series with the Under-19 teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Zimbabwe.

Along with Captain Priyam Garg, Yashasvi Jaiswal is another exciting young talent to watch out for at the Under-19 World Cup, 2020. Jaiswal is the youngest player to score a List-A double hundred, when he achieved the feat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai earlier in 2019. The season average for Jaiswal stood at 112.80 with a fifty and 3 hundreds. For the tour of South Africa and Quadrangular series, CTL Rakshan from Hyderabad will be the only additional player in the team.
