La Liga slams ‘cheats’ Manchester City and PSG

The La Liga has lashed out at Manchester City and Paris St-Germain stating “they are cheating and should be sanctioned” following the financial conduct allegations that were levied upon the middle east owned clubs. German news publication De Spiegel claims Manchester City and PSG have overvalued their sponsorship deals to help meet the UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
De Spiegel further claims that in 2014 the clubs negotiated a deal with FIFA president Gianni Infantino to reduce their punishments for breaking the FFP rules. Manchester City have refused to make any comments on the issue and claim that this is an attempt to damage their reputation. Paris St-Germain is yet to respond to the allegations as well.
“The Football Leaks documents appear to confirm what we have been saying for years. Both PSG and Manchester City are cheating and should be sanctioned. We certainly hope UEFA will take the right decisions and enforce Financial Fair Play rules, but we don’t have full confidence that they will. Should Uefa fail to act, we will do what we have said before: launch a complaint with European Union competition authorities” Joris Evers, chief communications officer of the La Liga was quoted saying by BBC Sport.
The documents leaked by Football leaks claim that Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour has paid more than £1.1bn to City via Abu Dhabi United Group between 2008 and 2012. They argue that Manchester City used ‘creative solutions’ to keep up with the FFP which included selling their player’s image rights to an external company, thus writing the costs off their accounts. The external company is said to have paid Manchester City close to £26m, and Sheikh Monsour reimbursed approximately £11m a year in secret through his holding company, the Abu Dhabi United Group.
In 2014 City was found guilty of breaching the FFP rules forcing the UEFA the club to come to a settlement where Manchester City had to cough up a fine of £49m and their Champions League squad reduced for the 2014-15 season. BBC reports claim that the £32m of that fine was later waived off. Since Sheikh Mansour took over Manchester City in 2008, the Sky Blues have won 3 Premier Leagues, an FA Cup and 3 League Cups, while spending in excess of £1.4bn on players.
