Barcelona News: Arthur Melo finally joins the La Liga champions

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Gremio midfielder Arthur Melo for a fee of €31 million . The original deal was set to take place in January next year following the conclusion of the Brazilian League, but the deal for the 21-year-old was fast-tracked.

A club statement on Barcelona’s website read: 'FC Barcelona and Gremio de Porto Alegre have agreed the transfer of the player Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo, following the agreement the two clubs reached in March.

'The agreement will see the Brazilian player immediately join the squad.

'The cost of the transfer is off €31 million with €9 million in variables.

'The schedule for the presentation of Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo as a new first team player will be announced shortly”

The announcement comes just 24 hours after the youngster had announced that he would be moving to Spain this summer.

'Barcelona are the ones who asked to bring my transfer forward this summer,' he said after signing the six-year deal with the Blaugaranas.

'It's a question of the clubs. My departure has been transparent and I'm very happy with how it has gone.

'It has been good for everyone involved.'

Arthur, whose contract will run till the end of 2023/24 campaign; has a buyout clause of €400 million inserted in the contract according to reports.

Melo's arrival could also prove to be a setback of sorts for the Spanish side as it will push Barcelona over their quota of non-EU players. Melo’s arrival coincided with Barcelona sending Paulinho back to the Chinese Super League on a one-year loan deal.

Melo has made seven appearances this season for Gremio, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He will be a huge asset to this Barcelona side that lack a bit of steel and toughness in their midfield.

Big, strong in possession and capable of picking out a pass, the Brazilian is yet to hit his peak and will be looking forward to playing alongside the likes of Messi, Suarez and Busquets.
