IPL 2020 Purple Cap: Bowlers Who Can Top the Wicket-Takers List

The Indian Premier League over the years has seen a number of matchwinning bowling performances. From hat-tricks to four-wicket hauls to five-wicket hauls, several bowlers have made a name for themselves in the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are examples of Indian bowlers who broke through the Indian team after their IPL exploits. Among the overseas names Lasith Malinga, Kagiso Rabada, Dwayne Bravo and Imran Tahir who have achieved huge success in the past. Many of the above-mentioned names might find themselves in the running for the IPL 2020 Purple Cap.

Here is a look at the bowlers who can win the Purple Cap in IPL 2020.

Lasith Malinga

With 170 wickets, Lasith Malinga is the highest wicket-taker in the IPL. He has been with Mumbai Indians since IPL 2009. He has been a consistent performer with the ball in the competition. He took 28 wickets in 2011 which remains his best season in the IPL. He took 16 wickets in IPL 2019. He is 30 wickets away from getting to 200 IPL wickets. If he has a similar season that he had in 2011, Malinga will certainly be one of the contenders of the IPL 2020 Purple Cap.

Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah, Malinga’s student has followed his footsteps to becoming the world-class bowler that he has turned into today. The spearhead of the Mumbai Indias attack along with Malinga, Bumrah bowls two at the start and two at the death most of the time. He is a Rohit Sharma’s bank, someone who can get you wickets at any moment of the game. He joined the franchise in 2013 and since 2016 has been constantly picking up more than 15 wickets for the defending champions. If both he and Malinga clicks for MI, there is no reason why they will not be able to defend their title. Bumrah makes it to our list of players who can win the IPL 2020 Purple Cap.

Rashid Khan

The SRH spinner will be Kane Williamson’s wicket-taking option in the upcoming edition of the IPL. With questions hovering over Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to cricket which has been halted by multiple injuries, Rashid Khan becomes the captain’s main weapon now. It will be interesting to see how he operates as he is a known proposition in world cricket now. Googly and the wrong-un are his biggest mystery deliveries. Rashid Khan makes it to our list of bowlers who can win the IPL 2020 Purple cap.

Pat Cummins

There will be weight of expectations on Cummins after he became the highest overseas cricketer ever in the IPL. KKR would be hoping that he tops the list of wicket-takers this season to help the team win their IPL title. Cummins have had a memorable 2019 as he took nearly 100 international wickets. He is making a comeback to IPL after 2017, when he took 15 wickets for Delhi Capitals.

Imran Tahir

CSK spinner Imran Tahir is the final name in the list of cricketers who can win the IPL 2020 Purple Cap. Having joined CSK in 2018, Tahir has become one of the key bowlers for the franchise. His equation with MS Dhoni from behind the wickets is something interesting to look forward to. Aging 40, Tahir brings his childlike energy onto the field and his celebration is arguably the best in the world.
