BBL 09: Rashid Khan, Haris Rauf Takes Hat-Trick On Same Day to Create History

It was an eventful day of play in the BBL 09 as the 27th and the 28th match saw two back to back hat-tricks by Adelaide Strikers spinner Rashid Khan and Melbourne Stars bowler Haris Rauf. This is the first time ever that two bowlers registered hat-tricks on the same day in the BBL history. While this was Rashid’s third T20I career hat-trick, it was a first for Rauf.

In the first match of the day between Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers in BBL 09 Rashid Khan bowled a spell of 4 for 22 including a hat-trick. Set to chase 136 to win, the Sixers were well placed at 79 for 3 when Rashid Khan was introduced into the attack.

He picked up James Vince (27) and Jack Edwards (0) of the last two deliveries of the 11th over to bring the Sixers down to 79 for 5 after 10. He came back in the 13th over of the innings and dismissed Jordan Silk. While Vince was caught by Carey, Edwards was leg-before. He came back and breached through the defence of Silk to take his third wicket. Despite his efforts with the ball, the Sixers won the game by two wickets.

In the second game of the day in BBL 09 Rauf bowled with express pace and tormented the Sydney Thunders’ batters. In the final over of the Thunders innings, Rauf picked up wickets of the second, third and the fourth ball to complete a memorable hat-trick.

His first wicket was Mathew Gilkes (41) who was caught off-guard by a sharp bouncer and caught at third man by Sandeep Lamichhane. He then picked up Thunder skipper Callum Ferguson (35) as he bowled him round his legs. Daniel Sams was his final wicket for the day as he was found plumb in front of the wicket.

The Stars on the back of fifties by Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell chased down the total with 13 balls to spare as they won by six wickets. After the two matches today in BBL 09, Melbourne Stars sit at the top of the table with 12 points from seven games. Sydney Sixers (12) and Adelaide Strikers (7) are second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat’s Tom Banton is also making an impression in the BBL 09. He has scored 151 runs from five matches but his strike rate of 196.10 is what has made the fans take notice.

Banton was bought by KKR at the IPL 2020 auctions for his base price of 1 crore. He is a like for like replacement for Chris Lynn whom Kolkata released ahead of the IPL 2020 auctions. He is one of the key players to watch out for KKR who had got together a strong squad heading into IPL 13.
