South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has revealed that Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has influenced his batting technique after an outstanding performance against Australia.
Bavuma scored a career-best 179 in the second Test at Gqeberha, helping South Africa recover from a difficult position.
His innings came after the hosts had slipped to 110 for six, leaving the team under considerable pressure.
The skipper showed remarkable patience and control against Australia’s experienced bowling attack.
His effort helped South Africa reach 425 for nine before declaring their first innings.
How Sachin Tendulkar Influenced Bavuma’s Technique
Bavuma explained that he studies Tendulkar’s approach and tries to apply aspects of the Indian great’s technique to his own game.
The South African captain said efficient movement is particularly important for him, as he does not rely on a large stride at the crease.
Instead, he aims to keep his movements compact and play the ball close to his body.
This method helps him maintain control while facing high-quality bowling.
His comments highlighted the lasting influence Tendulkar continues to have on international cricketers across generations.
Career-Best 179 Leads South Africa’s Fightback
Bavuma’s innings transformed South Africa’s position after early wickets threatened to undermine their first innings.
He built a crucial 132-run partnership with Marco Jansen, who contributed 85, before joining Simon Harmer for another significant stand.
Their partnership produced 183 runs, giving the lower order a major role in the recovery.
Harmer added an impressive 82 as South Africa turned a potential collapse into a commanding total.
Bavuma’s 179 surpassed his previous highest Test score of 172, which he made against the West Indies in 2023.
South Africa Gain Momentum Against Australia
The strong batting display gave South Africa renewed hope after losing the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs.
Following the declaration at 425 for nine, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada struck early in Australia’s reply by dismissing Nic Maddinson.
Australia ended the day at three for one, still facing a substantial deficit.
Bavuma’s knock combined disciplined defence with well-timed attacking shots, demonstrating his ability to lead under pressure.
South Africa will look to build on this momentum as they pursue a series-levelling victory in the second Test.
