Manchester United ended a difficult week with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, a result that did little to ease the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils travelled to Elland Road looking for a response after managing just two wins in nine matches across all competitions this season. However, they were unable to secure all three points against their fierce rivals.
The growing concerns surrounding the club intensified during the week after defender Lisandro Martinez criticised United’s hierarchy following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Lisandro Martinez Controversy Adds to United’s Problems
Martinez questioned the club’s management, arguing that Carrick had been left with an under-strength squad following an underwhelming summer transfer window.
Carrick insisted on Friday that the club had moved on from the incident, and the Argentina international was included in the starting line-up against Leeds.
The match began with plenty of intensity, although clear scoring opportunities were limited during the opening stages.
Leeds goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced an important save in the 26th minute, clawing away a Nico Elvedi header that was heading towards the top corner.
Bryan Mbeumo Gives Manchester United the Lead
Manchester United broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Bryan Mbeumo.
Youri Tielemans delivered a low cross from the right, allowing Mbeumo to guide the ball into the bottom corner for his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
Before finding the net, the forward had missed a headed opportunity and sent another effort straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford.
United went into half-time with the advantage, but Martinez was substituted at the interval, with Noussair Mazraoui coming on in his place.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin Earns Leeds a Point
Leeds responded strongly after the break and equalised in the 51st minute through Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Following a corner, Tarik Muharemovic directed the ball into a dangerous area with his head. Calvert-Lewin controlled it on his chest before finishing at full stretch to make it 1-1.
The goal shifted the momentum in Leeds’ favour, with the home side largely restricting United to counter-attacking opportunities.
Carrick introduced Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha in an attempt to find a late winner, but neither team managed to score again.
The draw left Manchester United in 13th place, with just one win in their previous seven league games, while Leeds occupied seventh position.
Brighton Thrash Crystal Palace 5-0
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Brighton produced an emphatic 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace to move temporarily into second place, overtaking Arsenal.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side made a flying start, scoring three goals inside the opening 10 minutes.
Palace defender Jaydee Canvot scored an own goal before Diego Gomez produced a spectacular effort from near the halfway line. Yasin Ayari added another goal to put Brighton firmly in control.
Brighton continued their dominance after the break, with Charalampos Kostoulas and substitute Jack Hinshelwood adding further goals to complete the convincing victory.
The result strengthened Brighton’s position in the league standings while leaving Crystal Palace with a difficult afternoon to forget.
Arsenal Look to Close the Gap on Manchester City
Arsenal were scheduled to face Nottingham Forest in Sunday’s late-afternoon fixture, with a victory needed to reduce the gap to Manchester City.
The Gunners were six points behind City, who had won all seven of their league matches this season.
Arsenal’s result would determine whether Brighton remained in second place or were overtaken again in the standings.
Bournemouth Secure First League Win of the Season
In another Premier League fixture, Bournemouth defeated 10-man Sunderland 2-0 to claim their first league victory of the season.
Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for Bournemouth, taking advantage of the opportunity to secure three important points.
The win provided Bournemouth with a boost as they looked to improve their position in the league table.
