Saudi Arabia end 22-year wait for another Gulf Cup title

Saudi Arabia won the 27th Gulf Cup on Tuesday after defeating the UAE 2-0 in the final, ending a 22-year wait for the prestigious trophy.

The hosts secured the title in front of their home supporters at King Abdullah Sports City with two early goals that gave them control of the match.

Saudi Arabia Take Early Lead

Saudi Arabia opened the scoring in the 11th minute through winger Hammam Al Hammami.

His effort from the edge of the box took a deflection before finding the net, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

The hosts quickly doubled their advantage. Feras Al Brikan scored from close range just two minutes later to put Saudi Arabia 2-0 ahead.

Saudi Arabia Maintain Control

Saudi Arabia continued to create opportunities after taking the lead.

Saleh Abu Alshamat, who started alongside his brother Mohammed, came close to adding another goal when his effort struck the crossbar.

The UAE were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

The UAE looked for a way back into the match after half-time.

Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al Owais made an important save to deny Sultan Adil from close range.

The UAE continued to push for a goal, but Fabio Lima hit the crossbar in the 88th minute as Saudi Arabia held on to their clean sheet.

Saudi Arabia Claim Fourth Gulf Cup Title

The victory gave Saudi Arabia their fourth Gulf Cup title and their first since 2004.

The triumph was particularly significant for the hosts, who had waited more than two decades to lift the trophy again.

Despite losing the final, the UAE enjoyed an impressive tournament under new coach Zlatko Dalic.

The Whites began their Group B campaign with a 4-0 victory over Yemen before defeating Bahrain 3-0. They then drew 1-1 with Qatar to progress to the knockout stage.

In the semifinal, Dalic’s side defeated Oman 1-0 to secure their place in the final against hosts Saudi Arabia.

UAE Turn Focus to 2027 Asian Cup

Following their Gulf Cup campaign, the UAE will now turn their attention to the 2027 Asian Cup.

The tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, giving the UAE another opportunity to compete on the regional stage.
