Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar was defeated by Japan’s Taizo Yoshida in the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 on September 30.
Yoshida secured an 11-0 victory by technical superiority to book his place in the final. Despite the semifinal defeat, Sunil Kumar remains in medal contention and will compete in the bronze medal match against a repechage contender.
Sunil had started his campaign strongly, defeating Tajikistan’s Muhammad Sultonzoda 9-0 by technical superiority in the opening round.
Indian Women’s Compound Team Wins Gold
India secured gold in the women’s compound team archery event. Jyothi Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated China 238-234 in the final.
The Indian trio had earlier beaten South Korea 234-233 in the semifinal.
Chikitha Taniparthi also reached the compound mixed team final alongside Sahil Jadhav after India defeated Thailand 156-155 in the semifinal.
The Indian women’s squash team defeated Singapore 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Tanvi Khanna and Anahat Singh secured victories in the singles matches, helping India advance further in the competition and confirm a medal run.
Pradhyumna Singh Rathod Reaches Canoe Slalom Final
In canoe slalom, Pradhyumna Singh Rathod qualified for the men’s kayak single final, keeping India’s hopes alive in the event.
India had mixed results in cycling.
Keerthy Rangaswamy Chikka advanced to the women’s keirin semifinal after coming through the repechage, while Sarita Kumari was eliminated.
In the men’s sprint qualification, David Beckham finished 14th and Ronaldo Singh 15th. Both were subsequently eliminated in the Round of 16 repechage.
Indian judoka Asmita Dey progressed to the women’s 48kg Round of 16 after defeating Vietnam’s Ha Ngoc Chi by ippon.
India’s men’s sepaktakraw team recorded a 2-0 victory over Laos in the quadrant group stage.
However, the Indian women’s team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Vietnam in Group A.
Nisha Dahiya Eliminated in Wrestling
India’s Nisha Dahiya was knocked out of the women’s freestyle 68kg competition in the Round of 16.
She lost to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum, ending her campaign in the event.
