The All-Star Sumo Competition, hosted by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), will take place at Space42 Arena in Abu Dhabi on September 26.
The event will mark the UAE’s first international professional sumo competition, bringing one of Japan’s oldest sporting traditions to audiences in the capital.
Nine Elite Rikishi to Compete
Nine professional rikishi from Japan, Mongolia and Egypt will compete across 36 bouts.
The lineup features athletes with world championship titles, Emperor’s Cup honours and years of professional experience, showcasing the international appeal of sumo.
Emperor’s Cup Winner Leads the Field
Japan’s Ichi will headline the competition. He is an Emperor’s Cup winner, with the title representing the highest honour in Japanese professional sumo.
Japanese competitor Hiroki, known as one of the largest active competitors in the sport, will also take part.
Mongolia will be represented by Mendee, a junior World Sumo Champion and International Sumo Champion.
Egyptian champion Ramy El-Gazar, who has earned international honours, will add a regional connection to the competition.
Traditional Sumo Experience
The event will offer more than just competitive bouts. Spectators will also be able to witness traditional elements of professional sumo, including the formal ring-entering procession and pre-bout rituals.
The ceremonies and preparation surrounding each bout will give visitors an insight into the centuries-old customs and traditions associated with the sport.
Professional Sumo Makes UAE Debut
The competition is being coordinated in collaboration with USA Sumo to maintain professional standards and preserve the traditional presentation of the sport.
Although sumo has a long history in Japan, professional competitions of this scale have rarely been staged in the region. The Abu Dhabi event will therefore provide audiences with an opportunity to experience the sport and its cultural traditions up close.
Space42 Arena to Host Sporting First
On September 26, Space42 Arena will be transformed to accommodate the traditional dohyo, the ring where sumo bouts take place.
With competitors arriving from Japan, Mongolia and Egypt, the All-Star Sumo Competition is set to highlight both the international reach of the sport and its deep Japanese heritage.
The event will mark a new sporting first for Abu Dhabi and the UAE, offering fans a rare opportunity to experience professional sumo in the capital.
