Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign Spain midfielder Rodri, with the transfer expected to become official in the coming days.
Barcelona Reach Agreement With Manchester City
A source from the Catalan club told AFP that Barcelona and Manchester City have agreed on a deal for the 30-year-old midfielder.
Reports indicate that Barcelona will pay around €75 million ($87 million) for Rodri.
A Barcelona source said an official announcement is expected in the coming days, paving the way for the Spain captain to return to his homeland.
Rodri Set for Barcelona Move
Rodri had previously been linked with Real Madrid, particularly after Spain’s World Cup triumph. However, Barcelona moved decisively to secure the midfielder’s signature.
The former Atletico Madrid player has been one of Manchester City’s most important figures since joining the club in 2019.
Ballon d’Or Winner Has Played Key Role at City
Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or after establishing himself as one of the world’s leading midfielders.
During his time at Manchester City, he became a central figure in Pep Guardiola’s system and helped the club win 12 major trophies, including the 2023 UEFA Champions League and four Premier League titles.
His ability to control possession, break up attacks and contribute in key moments made him one of City’s most influential players.
Barcelona Need Midfield Reinforcement
Barcelona’s decision to pursue Rodri has also been influenced by an injury to Frenkie de Jong, who is expected to be sidelined for several months.
The arrival of an experienced midfielder could provide Barcelona with greater depth and leadership as they prepare for the new campaign.
Two Bids Rejected Before Agreement
Barcelona reportedly saw two offers rejected by Manchester City before eventually reaching an agreement on Sunday.
The deal would make Rodri one of the club’s major additions this summer as Barcelona continue to strengthen their squad.
Rodri’s Injury Concerns
Although Rodri has enjoyed remarkable success at City, injuries have affected his availability during the past two seasons.
Despite those setbacks, he returned to top form for Spain and played an important role as the national team secured another World Cup triumph.
Barcelona Continue Summer Recruitment
Rodri is set to join a Barcelona squad that has already added several players during the summer transfer window.
The Catalan club are also reportedly close to completing a deal for João Cancelo, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona from Al Hilal.
If completed, the arrival of Rodri and Cancelo would provide Barcelona with significant experience and strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
