Cristiano Ronaldo has raised fresh questions about his future by suggesting that the upcoming year could be the final season of his extraordinary playing career.
Ronaldo Calls Time on Career Potentially Near
The 41-year-old Portugal captain said his retirement could be approaching as he reflects on more than two decades at the highest level.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said in an interview with Vogue.
The statement has intensified speculation about when one of football’s most celebrated careers could come to an end.
A Career Spanning More Than Two Decades
Ronaldo made his senior debut for Sporting in 2002 and went on to establish himself as one of the greatest players in football history.
He has won major trophies with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while also becoming a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Across his career, Ronaldo has scored 976 goals for club and country, putting him within touching distance of the remarkable 1,000-goal milestone.
World Cup Glory Remains Missing
Despite his extraordinary list of achievements, Ronaldo has never won the FIFA World Cup.
Portugal’s failure to lift the trophy at this year’s tournament means the biggest prize in international football remains absent from his collection of honours.
The Portugal captain will nevertheless continue to represent his country as he enters what could be the final stage of his international career.
Ronaldo Looks Beyond Football
Ronaldo also acknowledged that retirement could leave a significant gap after spending around 25 years devoted to professional football.
He said he expects to explore other interests, including travelling, watching and playing padel, while enjoying life away from the intense demands of professional sport.
The forward suggested that having different activities and interests will be important once football is no longer at the centre of his daily life.
Al-Nassr Star Chasing 1,000 Goals
For now, Ronaldo remains focused on playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
With 976 career goals already to his name, the legendary forward is just 24 goals away from reaching 1,000, a milestone that could become one of the defining final chapters of his remarkable career.
As Ronaldo prepares for another season, football fans could be witnessing the beginning of the final countdown of one of the sport’s greatest-ever careers.
