The Uruguay international will spend the 2026-27 season at Liverpool after Barcelona confirmed an agreement running until June 30, 2027.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has completed a loan move to Liverpool, with the Spanish champions officially confirming that the Uruguay international will spend the 2026-27 season with the Premier League club.

FC Barcelona announced on Monday that an agreement had been reached with Liverpool for Araujo’s loan until June 30, 2027, bringing an end to speculation surrounding the centre-back’s immediate future.

The move gives Liverpool an experienced and physically imposing option in central defence as the club strengthens its squad for the new campaign.

Araujo joined Barcelona on August 29, 2018, initially linking up with Barça B before establishing himself in the senior side. He made his first-team debut during the 2019-20 season and was permanently promoted to the first-team squad in 2020-21.

During his time with Barcelona, the Rivera-born defender developed into one of the club’s senior figures and became one of the first-team captains.

Barcelona said Araujo has made 213 appearances for the club and scored 14 goals. He has also collected eight trophies during his time with the Catalan giants.

Known for his strength, pace, aerial ability and aggressive defending, Araujo can operate at centre-back and has also been used on the right side of defence.

His arrival provides Liverpool with additional depth and experience at the back ahead of a demanding domestic and European campaign.

For Araujo, the temporary move represents a first opportunity to play in the Premier League after spending the bulk of his senior European career with Barcelona.

Barcelona’s official announcement confirmed the duration of the loan but did not disclose further financial terms of the agreement.

The 27-year-old will now look to make an impact in English football before his scheduled return at the end of the 2026-27 season.
