Fifa World Cup: Iran say they were denied recovery time, ordered out of US

Iran’s push for a ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2026 has been shrouded in further controversy when head coach Amir Ghalenoei revealed his squad did not have sufficient time to recover after being ordered to leave the United States immediately following their Group G opener against New Zealand.

Melli came away with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand Monday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. But instead of remaining overnight to recover, the Iranian delegation was allegedly ordered to head straight back to their training base in Tijuana, Mexico. Ghalenoei said he was frustrated over the decision, because the team already had planned on remaining in Los Angeles after the match and returning home Thursday.

Coach Voices Frustration Over Travel Arrangements

Ghalenoei said after the game that while travel was always a possibility, timing so close to the match made it more difficult for the players to recover and left the team baffled as to the logic of requiring.

Key Concerns Raised by Iran:

Players were allegedly refused their planned post-match recovery period.

The crew were ordered to clear out of Los Angeles at once.

Team officials contend they weren’t offered any explanation at all.

Disruptions in travel have further complicated logistics.

The coach labelled Iran “potentially the most downtrodden team in this World Cup,” referring to how difficult it has been for the group on and off the pitch at the tournament.

Visa Issues Continue to Affect Iran’s Campaign

The latest row follows a series of earlier visa and travel issues surrounding the Iranian delegation. Team’s captain Mehdi Taremi said that many football federation officials, coaching staff and journalists could not be on the national team’s flight due to being refused a visa.

Challenges Facing the Iranian Team:

Support staff and officials left in limbo because of visa delays

Question marks for travel and hotels during the tournament

Less support structure around the national team.

Now more logistical pressures in the run up to further matches.

Taremi said they had appealed to FIFA for more help, calling the situation “a disaster.” Iranian officials say they are unable to fully prepare for the competition and that daily operations have been complicated, citing key personnel who have yet to arrive.

Iran Earns Valuable Point Against New Zealand

With the distractions off the field, Iran gathered a point in their opening game. Eli Just netted a brace for New Zealand, while Ramin Rezaeian and Mohamed Mohebi scored for Iran. But Team Melli were rescued from defeat by an impressive second-half header from Mohebi.

New Zealand’s two goals were netted by Eli Just.

Ramin Rezaeian and Mohamed Mohebi were on target for Iran.

Belgium drew its opener with Egypt, meaning Group G remains all in play too.

Armed with their ambition to make the world a better place — and unencumbered by world football’s governing body — Iran head back to Los Angeles Sunday for a Group G clash against Belgium at SoFi Stadium.
