The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Thursday that The finals of the Billie Jean King Cup, the redesigned Fed Cup which was scheduled to be held from April 13-18 in Budapest, has been deferred once more due to COVID-19 guidelines in Hungary.
The opening ceremony 12-nation finals was at first scheduled to take place in March last year before the COVID-19 outbreak obligated authorities to put it back a year.
The ITF and the Hungarian National Sports Agency (NSA) said that the finals would be put on hold till later this year.
In a statement, an organizer said that Several circumstances are under review, that include playing behind closed doors.
“Even so, ongoing uncertainties and the challenges due to the COVID-19 virus, locally and globally, have made it impossible to organize a world cup team competition of this scale indoors in Budapest on the planned date.”
Although the finals have been rescheduled, playoff matches for the 2022 qualifiers are expected to go ahead on a home-away basis on April 16-17.
The tournament was renamed last year in recognition of Billie Jean King who helped the United States win the annual Fed Cup in 1963. France is the reigning premiers after winning their third title in 2019.
