Manchester United News: Marouane Fellaini set to sign new contract

Marouane Fellaini is set to sign a new two-year contract at Manchester United according to reports from BBC. The 30-year-old was expected to leave Old Trafford after his current deal expires on 30th June.

The Belgian midfielder was linked with a free transfer to AC Milan and Arsenal but is now set to make a u-turn and stay at Old Trafford. Reports suggest that he was unhappy with the length of the previous contract that was offered by Man United and was looking for a move away.

Jose Mourinho has, however, always insisted that he wanted the former Everton man to stay and the club was in active negotiations over the past few months. Their attempts to try to persuade him to remain finally got him to sign a new deal – less than 72 hours before his current contract expired.

Fellaini joined from Everton in 2013 and had made 156 appearances for Manchester United so far. Then manager David Moyes had got the club to pay £27 million to secure his services.

In February this year, Jose Mourinho was famously quoted saying, “I told him yesterday: ‘Sign the contract and shut up.’ I told him: ‘Don’t gamble too much. Sign the contract before you know the extent of the injury.’

Fellaini has also confirmed that he has indeed signed a contract but has not revealed the club. He also said that he would be announcing the deal before the World Cup ends and was waiting for July 1st.

“I know where I’m going to play next year and that does not affect my performance at World Cup. The contract has been signed, and I’m going to announce it within a few days,” said Fellaini.

Majority of the Manchester United are unhappy with their club for keeping hold of a player who was desperate to leave. Many expressed their anger on Twitter with the club mentions filled with tweets asking for explanations.
