Ed Woodward and Jose Mourinho’s transfer war affecting Manchester United’s transfer quests

Daily Mail has sensationally claimed that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and chief executive Ed Woodward are at loggerheads over the club’s transfer inactivity.

At a time when direct rivals like Liverpool, Arsenal and even Chelsea and Manchester City to some extent have strengthened their squads, United have been alarmingly dormant in the market.

Though, United started off their business early, signing Fred and Diogo Dalot ahead of the World Cup, there have been no signings ever since.

Accordingly, Jose Mourinho is keen to add up qualitative numbers in the squad as he would look to bridge the 19 points gap between United and Manchester City.

 The report from Daily Mail states that Woodward and Mourinho are not on the same page regarding the transfer targets and hence the CEO has asked the manager to offload some players before buying.

The report also claims that Mourinho has been denied any more funds and that would be extremely worrisome for the former Real Madrid manager.

Mourinho has revealed that he had given a five-man transfer shortlist to the board, but it seems like only two of the asked signings have been made yet. Lee Grant has been signed as probably the third-choice goalkeeper, and hence he adds minimum value to the team’s on-field performances.

United’s pursuit of Toby Alderweireld hasn’t concluded yet either, as Spurs’ and United’s valuation of the Belgian international vary by a distant margin.

To be honest, United desperately need a senior central defender to add some valuable experience and stability to the backline. The club’s two best defenders, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are both 24-years-old and they could do well with the addition of a proven Premier League centre-back.

Moreover, signing a right-winger seems to be paramount too, but the club is unable to narrow down on any of the realistic targets. The likes of Willian and Ivan Perisic are valued way too high by their respective clubs, and neither of them have the benefit of age by their side.

 Gareth Bale would possibly stay with Real Madrid post the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, and hence the United board have had issues in signing any possible right-winger.

 If anything, that last ten days of the transfer window promise to bring lots of news, reports and rumors for Jose Mourinho’s team.
