Barcelona News: Midfielder states playing for Barca has become a hell

Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes has had a frustrating at Camp Nou time since his move from Valencia in the summer of 2016. The Catalans paid a fee of €35 million with plus €20 million in add-ons to secure the services of the Portuguese but he has looked a pale shadow of his former self.

A star at Valencia, Gomes proves pivotal for his country as they went to win the 2016 European Championships. He, however, has failed to click in the colours of Barcelona and has largely been considered as one of the biggest transfer flops for the Blaugarana in recent years.

And now the player has come out to talk about the “hell” he has been living through.

“I do not feel good playing…I’m not enjoying what I do,” Gomes revealed to Panenka in a revealing interview.

“My friends tell me I am playing with the hand brake on and I know this is true, and it is bothering me why I cannot step it up from there.

“Things changed after my first six months and there was more pressure, which is fine but I’m too self-critical of myself…I’m a perfectionist and cannot tolerate my mistakes, it has become a hell…maybe that is not the right word.

“I cannot shake negative moments out of my head and it impacts on my performances and I am thinking too much.

“It leads me to feel ashamed and sometimes I feel that I cannot leave the house due to the shame and due to people looking at me.”

After failing to impress Luis Enrique in his first season at the club, many thought that Ernesto Valverde’s arrival might bring out the best in him. The 24-year-old, however, has failed to impress the new man at the helm as well.

Gomes has started only four league games this season and has been tipped as one of the favourites to leave Barcelona next summer.
