James Anderson handed one demerit point and fined by the match referee

England fast bowler James Anderson has been handed a demerit point and has been fined 15% of his match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for showing dissent during the ongoing fifth Test between India and England at the Kia Oval in England.

He was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match”.

The incident happened on day two of the match when Anderson appealed for an LBW decision against Indian skipper Virat Kohli in the 29th over of India’s innings and the umpire Kumar Dharmasena refused to raise his finger.

England went upstairs and the DRS decision went in favour of the Indian skipper as the impact showed umpire's call. Kohli stayed at the crease while England retained their review on the virtue of the third umpire's decision being decided by the on-field umpire's call.

At the end of the over, Anderson snatched his cap and jumper from umpire Dharmasena and then spoke to him in an aggressive manner for giving Kohli not out initially. Anderson admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee Andy Pycroft and there was no need for a formal hearing.

Maybe Anderson would have been frustrated by the fact that he is yet to dismiss Virat Kohli in nine innings in the series so far. Prior to the start of the series, the battle between Anderson and Kohli was the major talking point.

Dharmasena, along with his fellow on-field umpire Joel Wilson, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Tim Robinson leveled the charges to the match referee. Usually, breaching the Level 1 of ICC Code of Conduct will see the match referee slap a penalty of up to 50% of the player's match fee along with one or two demerit points.
