Russia’s Artemiev records thrilling victory in Katara International Chess Championship 2021

The 2021 Katara International Chess Championship has witnessed a new champion as the Russian Grandmaster Vladislav Artemiev secured a thrilling victory against America’s GM Andrew Tang. Artemiev’s victory came through a thrilling ‘online buller’ tie-breaker by scoring 7.5-6.5 dominating Tang, from their respective countries as the live match was witnessed by more than 4000 spectators.

With a total of 11 bullet games in total with both the players winning games each, the former young prodigies scored two draws each to be locked at 6.5-6.5, which resulted in a tie break.

Globally ranked fourth among those aged less than 25 years of age, the 23-year-old Artemiev is known as one of the best youngest chess players to have contested in major competitions securing mesmerizing wins.

Artemiev, who broke into the upper echelon of elite chess in 2019, became one of the best players in the world and has proved once again by defeating his competent from US in this tournament, Tang. Artemiev was presented with $4,000 and Tang was awarded $2,000.

In semi-finals, the 21-year-old Tang dominated the previous champion and seven-time world champion from Norway, Magnus Carlsen for 7-4, while Artemiev defeated Alexander Grischuk for 7-1.

Appreciating on the success of this tournament, Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation — Katara, said that “We are delighted with the exciting finish and the worldwide participation of top-ranked players in the Katara International Chess Tournament 2021. Katara as a cultural institution has always been to support and which also reflect the State of Qatar’s interest in sport.”
