Australian Open 2020 Prediction- Top 3 Contenders to win the Women’s Australian Open Title
- Updated: January 22, 2020
The contest for the women’s Australian Open title will be very exciting this year, going by the array of talented athletes and some of the world’s most explosive female tennis stars taking part in the 2020 edition. The Australian Open title for women is a lot more inclusive than the men’s category which is majorly dominated by the Big 3, i.e. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Here, the women’s singles draw is more open and there are several contenders who can spring an upset as well.
Serena Williams has been the dominant women’s tennis champion for a long period of time without many challengers on a consistent basis. However, the 23-time Grand Slam winner last won a major title in the year 2017 and her dominance has now been falling apart with talented athletes and a new generation at the forefront, led by Naomi Osaka. All Grand Slams last year were won by players less than 30 years of age with 3 of the winners being less than 25 years of age. Will Williams win a record 24 Grand Slam title or will the young generation continue its rapid march towards global dominance?
Here’s looking at the top 3 contenders for winning the Australian Open women’s title in 2020
- Simona Halep- Simona Halep won a Grand Slam each in the years 2018 and 2019 with her last victory being at Wimbledon, where she defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 and showed her immense talent and prowess. Halep is a real contender this time and she is in excellent form at the moment with ample experience as well. Halep may have also got a better 2020 Australian Open draw where she may bypass major rivals like Osaka, Williams and Ashleigh Barty until the semi-finals/finals at least. This will rapidly scale up her chances at this year’s edition.
- Serena Williams- Serena Williams didn’t win any Grand Slams over the last couple of years in spite of reaching four finals at the same time. In spite of coming close to matching the record of 24 Grand Slam titles set by Margaret Court, Serena has fallen adrift every time! While there were whispers of how motherhood was making it difficult for her to win another Grand Slam, she finally won her first WTA title in a whopping two years in Auckland. This makes her a firm favorite for the 2020 Australian Open women’s title. She will be looking to win her 24 Grand Slam at last and based on recent form, she may go the distance eventually!
- Naomi Osaka– The obvious favorite, Naomi Osaka is not the highest-ranked women’s tour player at the moment but she has been one of the best contenders for silverware over the last 2-3 years. She is the only other women’s player to have won Grand Slam titles in both 2018 and 2019 like Simona Halep. Yet, what gives her a distinct advantage over Halep and many other rivals is her 100% successful record in finals of Grand Slams. This indicates her overall calmness and maturity which are perfect foils to her skills and talent. She is the defending Australian Open women’s title champion from last year and will get a tough draw to overcome. Osaka continues to be a firm favorite to retain her title and win her 3 rd Grand Slam.
These are the three contenders who can win the women’s Australian Open title in 2020. All three of them bring an exciting mixture of ability, skill, talent and fortitude to the table, making them sheer delights to watch on court.
