Gill’s health took a turn for the worse as his platelet count dropped, necessitating his admission to a Chennai hospital. Sources have confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) medical team is closely monitoring his condition.
The BCCI released a statement on Monday confirming Gill’s absence from the Delhi fixture and explaining that he would remain in Chennai under medical supervision. The statement read, “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October.”
Shubman Gill’s absence comes as a significant setback for Team India, as the 24-year-old had been in exceptional form over the past year, particularly in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). In 2023, he had been on a prolific run-scoring spree, amassing five centuries in the ODI format.
