El Clasico 2019: Barcelona and Real Madrid agree for 18 December 2019

There has been immense speculation regarding El Clasico 2019. In recent developments, the El Clasico game between Real Madrid and Barcelona has been postponed to another date in light of recent protests taking place in Barcelona after the arrests of 9 Catalan movement leaders. These leaders were arrested sometime earlier and this spurred major protests in Catalonia. Reports have stated that these protestors were seeking to use the upcoming El Clasico 2019 game as the platform for venting out their concerns relating the political scenario in the country.

This prospective threat has been swiftly identified by the Spanish Football Federation and the date has been shifted to December after a mutual agreement between both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

New El Clasico 2019 date- The new date will be 18th December, 2019 as compared to 26th October, 2019 previously.

As per reports, there was a proposal made to shift the game to the Bernabeu which is Real Madrid’s stadium, on the original date scheduled. However, the offer was spurned by both clubs. Barcelona understandably had concerns about losing out on a home game against their key rivals but why Real Madrid said NO to this offer is still unknown. The upcoming El Clasico 2019 will be the first ever since Eden Hazard shifted to Real Madrid and Antoine Griezmann came to Barcelona. The 2019-20 season is one of rebuilding and restructuring for Real Madrid and they have majorly refreshed their squad with big signings such as Eden Hazard, Eder Militao and Luka Jovic.

Los Blancos did not win a trophy in the last season and they will now push for more silverware under the newly-reinstated Zinedine Zidane as coach. Barcelona, on the other hand, did win the La Liga trophy in the last season although they were disappointed at being knocked out of the Champions League and also the Copa Del Rey. Barcelona has made major investments in the team for the current season, snapping up Antoine Griezmann and Frankie de Jong among others.

Second El Clasico Date– The second El Clasico will be held on a particular date between March and April next year. This may be held at the Santiago Bernabeu as per reports.

The two teams may also face each other at the Copa del Rey although the first round draw for the tournament will not be released till the 18th of December, 2019. Last year, Real Madrid faced Barcelona 4 times in Copa del Rey and La Liga. The Real Madrid side was blown by Barcelona’s superb run of form. Barcelona won 5-1 in the month of October prior to winning 1-0 in the return game. In Copa del Rey, Barcelona won 4-1 (aggregate), eliminating Real Madrid at the semi-final stage.
