Australian Open 2020 Prediction- Top 3 Contenders to win the Men’s Australian Open Title

There is huge excitement revolving around the 2020 Australian Open and it is hard to predict the eventual winner of the coveted men’s title at the premier event. Novak Djokovic looks set to be the clear favorite and extend his dominance at the Australian Open 2020 since he has already won 7 Australian Open titles which is a huge record. 6 of these titles have been won since the year 2010 and his all-time record at the Australian Open stands at 68 matches won to 8 matches lost.

However, Djokovic did not exactly finish 2019 on a high when he retired in the fourth round at the U.S. Open. However, that does not diminish his chances in any way whatsoever and he takes pole position as the favorite to win the men’s Australian Open title which will be his 17th major title in a glittering career till date. Djokovic has won 19 consecutive hard court sets against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The conditions suit his style of playing and he should certainly romp home this time around as well.

Rafael Nadal takes centre stage as the second favorite to win this year’s Australian Open followed by Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev will face major challenges in tackling Melbourne’s hot and stifling conditions and he has never played beyond the 4th round at the Grand Slam. He also needs to work more on his volleying as per several experts. However, his results and statistics tilt things slightly in his favor and he was closely pushing even Djokovic at the ATP Cup sometime earlier.

Coming back to Nadal, he won a relatively easy match in the first round versus Hugo Dellien at the 2020 Australian Open, defeating him 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 and he is now aiming at equaling the record of 20 Grand Slams set by Roger Federer. Nadal has cemented his place as the clear favorite after Djokovic, winning four ATP titles in the recent past and losing only twice, thereby finishing the year as Number 1 ranked player for the 5th time in his illustrious career. He even helped Spain win the Davis Cup Finals and won the Mubadala World Tennis Championship as well.

Nadal has lost several finals at the Australian Open and has won his sole title in 2009. Even Jelena Dokic has reportedly picked him as her favorite for this year’s title. His excellent 2019 season will put him up as a major contender to Djokovic and his recent performances stand to reason that he should make a major push for the title this year!

Returning to Medvedev, he is the wildcard that can unseat the Big Three, namely Nadal, Federer and Djokovic, a fact seconded by none other than tennis legend John McEnroe. The Russian athlete may well be this year’s surprise champion with a quirky playing style that has seen him win four titles so far, with 59 victories in 2019 which is the highest on the tour. McEnroe believes that Medvedev can go all the way this year at the Australian Open. He was the finalist at last year’s U.S. Open and pushed Nadal hard in spite of his eventual loss. The last 12 Grand Slams have been won either by Nadal, Federer or Djokovic and Medvedev has an opportunity to create something different this time. He has been seeded fourth at Melbourne and may run into Nadal once again in the semi-final if he maintains his golden run of form. So, to sum things up, the list of favorites stands thus- Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev.
