Qatar is Set To Make its Debut in the Winter Youth Olympic Games

Qatar will make its debut in the Winter Youth Olympic Games that is slated to begin from January 9, 2020. A host of young athletes from countries without a winter sports background will be taking part in the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Haiti, Qatar, Ecuador, Pakistan, and Thailand are among the 12 nations making their debut appearance in the event. This event is a major international multi-sport event and cultural festival for teenagers in Lausanne, Switzerland, the home of the International Olympic Committee and will carry on till January 22, 2020.

Thawab Al-Subaey is the first Qatari Athlete to be taking part in the Winter Youth Olympics. He will be representing Qatar in the Ice Hockey event. Ice hockey has seen a lot of growth in the desert land and it is the state of the art infrastructure which has made the athletes take up this sport professionally.

Norway, Canada, Russia, Germany, South Korea, hosts Switzerland, and the United States are among the top nations to participate in the event and are also expected to win the most number of medals as well. 

The Youth Olympic Games will feature 8 sports and 16 disciplines across 81 events. There will be 13 mixed team events stated by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) , 34 men’s events, and 34 women’s events. Ski mountaineering and women’s Nordic combined event will feature for the first time in an Olympic event. A mixed-NOC 3-on-3 ice hockey tournament and a women’s doubles event in luge will also be contested for the first time.
