La Liga set to be played in the United States or Canada

The Spanish top-tier Football league, La Liga, is set to create history as a competitive fixture will be held outside Spain for the first time this season. From the upcoming 2018-19 season, a competitive La Liga game will be played in the United States or Canada for the next decade and a half after the league reached a 15-year joint venture agreement with Relevant, a multinational media, sports and entertainment company, for the promotion of the league in North America.

The venture, LaLiga North America, will represent La Liga in the United States and Canada and will support the league's growth by establishing and developing youth academies, youth Football coaches, selling the brand in the continent by having various fan events and exhibition matches.

Relevant is a company owned by Stephen Ross, who is also the owner of professional American football team Miami Dolphins and a co-owner of Dolphins' home, the Hard Rock Stadium. This means the Hard Rock Stadium is likely to host the La Liga matches going forward.

The project began 18 months ago but Relevant was chosen as the partners earlier this year because of their experience of working with La Liga giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during the preseason tournament International Champions Cup. The particulars of the joint venture were finalized in the last few days.

'This extraordinary joint venture is the next giant leap in growing soccer's popularity in North America. This unique relationship will create new opportunities for millions of North American soccer fans to experience the most passionate, exciting, and the highest level of soccer in the world,' Ross said.

La Liga president Javier Tebas is delighted with the development and feels that this agreement will give a major impulse to the popularity of the sport in the US.

'We're devoted to growing the passion for soccer around the world. This ground-breaking agreement is certain to give a major impulse to the popularity of the beautiful game in the U.S. and Canada. Relevant has filled stadiums across the U.S. with the International Champions Cup, [and] we're thrilled to partner with them on a joint mission to grow soccer in North America,' Tebas said.
