Bangladesh star ruled out of Asia Cup 2018

The 2018 Asia Cup got underway earlier today with Bangladesh choosing to bat first against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka struck early to leave Bangladesh tottering at 1/2 after the first over with opener Liton Das and Shakib-al-Hasan back in the hut, thanks to some brilliant bowling from Lasith Malinga.

But the Tigers suffered their biggest loss in the fifth ball of the second over bowled by Suranga Lakmal as the Sri Lankan pacer directed a short of a length delivery at opener Tamim Iqbal, who lined himself up to play a pull shot and ended up missing the ball completely.

The ball hit him on the wrist and the southpaw was down in pain immediately and was treated by the physio. He was in clear discomfort, which was clearly evident by the reaction on his face and was taken off the pitch immediately.

He was later taken to a nearby hospital for scans and it has been confirmed that the opening batsman will not take any further part in the tournament as the scans revealed that he has fractured his left wrist. The absence of Tamim, who was spotted in the Bangladesh dressing room wearing a sling on his left hand, will hurt Bangladesh badly as he has been their go-to batsman in ODIs for a while now.

Tamim is Bangladesh's leading run scorer in ODIs as he has scored 6306 runs in 183 matches at an average of over 36. He would have been the perfect foil to Mushfiqur Rahim, who waged a lone battle for Bangladesh in the opening match of the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh are yet to name a replacement for their veteran batsman and the announcement can be expected right after the ongoing match. In all likelihood, the selectors will recall either Soumya Sarkar or Anamul Haque to partner Liton Das at the top of the order.
