Valentina Shevchenko’s Unique Background and Upcoming Rematch

Valentina Shevchenko is gearing up for a highly-anticipated rematch against Alexa Grasso, following their stunning encounter in March that saw Grasso become the second Mexican-born UFC champion. However, Shevchenko’s unique background sets her apart in the world of mixed martial arts.

While Alexa Grasso made history as the second Mexican-born UFC champion, Valentina Shevchenko holds the distinction of being the first champion from her homeland. She is a polyglot, fluent in English, Spanish, and Russian. But where exactly is she from?

Valentina Shevchenko was born in Frunze, which was part of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. Today, it is known as Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian country. Ethnically, Shevchenko hails from an East Slavic background, as she comes from a Russian-Ukrainian family.

She has previously identified herself as Russian and considers Russian her native language. However, Kyrgyzstan is not the only country she has a connection to. Shevchenko is also Peruvian, having gained citizenship in 2008 after initially training there in 2007.

Ahead of her upcoming rematch with Alexa Grasso at Noche UFC, Valentina Shevchenko proudly represents all three of her countries: Kyrgyzstan, where she was born; Russia, her ethnic homeland; and Peru, her adopted nation.

Shevchenko aims to rectify her prior loss to Grasso, attributing it to a mistake on her part rather than underestimating her opponent’s role in the upset. She views the loss as a fluke and is determined to set the record straight in their upcoming bout.

Regarding the retirement of Amanda Nunes, Shevchenko offered a gracious response. While there have been criticisms and calls for a trilogy fight between the two, Shevchenko expressed her understanding and respect for Nunes’ decision to retire from MMA. She remains open to the possibility of a trilogy if Nunes decides to return but is content with the current situation.

Valentina Shevchenko’s multifaceted background and unwavering determination make her a captivating figure in the world of mixed martial arts. As she prepares to step into the Octagon once again, her unique journey adds an intriguing dimension to her upcoming rematch with Alexa Grasso.
