Wolves planning to sign former Real Madrid man Pepe – Reports

Wolverhampton Wanderers are planning a shock transfer for former Real Madrid centre-back Pepe. The 35-year-old is believed to be rated at around £7million by his present club Besiktas, who signed him a year ago.

The Portuguese currently has one year left in his £80,000 a week contract. According to the Birmingham Mail, his former club Porto seem to be realistic suitors as well. However, with the Portuguese side signing Chancel Mbemba – that link seems to have died down.

Pepe had become one of the pillars in Real Madrid’s side during his last few years at the club. Over the course of 10 years at the Bernabeu, he won 13 trophies whilst winning 99 caps for Portugal.

Wolves have been one of the busiest clubs in the ongoing transfer window, having already added eight players to their squad. Although Pepe’s quest comes as a shock, one must be aware of the high-profile signings already made by the Midlands side.

The move would make more sense when one learns that the influential Jorge Mendes is the agent of Pepe. On the back of a healthy and civil relationship with Nuno Espírito Santo, Mendes has helped the arrivals of a number of top-class players including Ruben Neves, Diego Jota and the formidable Rui Patricio to Molineux.

Santo would be looking at Pepe in order to add experience to his back line and help the younger players in the team learn from the legendary defender’s presence – both on and off the pitch.

The newly promoted side wouldn’t mind paying the amount to add his experience and the discipline he brings in. They haven’t eaten up much time in completing deals and this one too, should be a matter of time if they are really looking at it with any seriousness.

Given the fact that Pepe was left out of the Besiktas squad for their Europa League qualifying fixture, this transfer shouldn’t be too much of a fuss.

While this may look like a short-term fix, it should have a long-term implication as well. Having been promoted from the Championship, Wolves will be looking at survival as their first target in the coming Premier League season and Pepe’s inclusion could help them not only steady the ship for this season but also help give them a platform to build for success in the long term.

Apart from his world-class defensive abilities, he is someone who has the tasted the winning feeling many a time.

Also to mention, he would become the 8th Portuguese in their first team, should he switch to the Molineux. Therefore, the team chemistry is expected to improve as well.
