United made a huge mistake re-signing Pogba, if Alex Ferguson is to be believed

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the Red Devils were doomed the moment they decided to re-sign Paul Pogba in the summer of 2016. Pogba had left United to join Juventus while Sir Alex was still at the helm; a decision which left the Scotsman seething at the time.

Ferguson accused the French midfielder of lacking respect and also had a falling out with Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola. Sir Alex opened up about the frosty nature of his relationship with Raiola and Pogba in his book Leading, stating that he never trusted Raiola one bit.

“There are one or two football agents I simply do not like and Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba’s agent, is one of them. I distrusted him from the moment I met him. He became Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s agent while he was playing for Ajax, and eventually he would end up representing Pogba, who was only 18 years old at the time,” Sir Alex wrote.

“We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco. He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus,” he added.

United signed Pogba from Juventus for a whopping £89 million in 2016, but the Frenchman has failed to live up to his lofty price tag. The expectations coupled with Jose Mourinho’s insistence on defensive contributions have stifled Pogba and he has looked a shadow of the player he was during his time at Turin.

His recent falling-out with Mourinho has only added fuel to the rumours of him looking to exit Old Trafford, with many of the supporters and former players urging the Portuguese manager to give him the boot come January.
