UEFA Champions League 2017/18: Crisitiano Ronaldo breaks yet another record after win over Bayern

Real Madrid furthered their Champions League credentials by beating Bayern Munich in the first leg of the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena. With a lead of 2-1, Madrid have the advantage of two away goals before going to the Bernabeu for the second leg.

The Galacticos won thanks to goals from Marcelo and Marco Asensio – who scored at each side of the half time – to overcome a 1-0 deficit after Joshua Kimmich scored the first goal of the game.

This game marked the first Champions League encounter in which Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score for Real Madrid this season. In his previous 10 encounters in the Europe’s premier competition, he had scored 15 goals – but failed to add to it against the Bavarians.

And even then, however, he touched another landmark. With Real Madrid’s win in the last game, the Portugal captain now holds the record of winning the most matches in the Champions League.

The former Manchester United man has won 96 games in the competition, beating the record of former Real Madrid goalkeeper and team-mate Iker Casillas, who has 95 wins to his name.

The third on the list is Xavi with 91 wins, followed by Raul and Andres Iniesta with 79 wins, Ryan Giggs with 74 wins and Lionel Messi with 73 victories to his name.

It is worth noting that only Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas have represented more than one club in the Champions League, with the Spanish World Cup-winning captain gaining most of his wins during his time at the Bernabeu.
